Recommendation
Docker packages runtimes for environments that support containers; managed hosting can remove some operational responsibilities but limits control. They are not strictly mutually exclusive.
Decide by constraints
Check whether the selected hosting plan supports persistent processes and containers, whether the team can handle updates and backups, and whether the workload requires privileged control. Never assume shared hosting permits container execution.
Structured comparison
| Criterion | Docker ↗ | Vercel ↗ | GreatHosts ↗ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Package applications and dependencies into containers. | Managed deployment platform for web applications. | Hosting options for websites and server workloads. |
| Pricing model | open-source | freemium | paid |
| Deployment | Container runtime | Managed platform | Shared / VPS / dedicated |
| Best for | Teams wanting reproducible runtime environments. | Teams building supported Next.js or front-end applications. | Businesses needing to compare website and server hosting categories. |
| Limitations | Hosting plans where containers or privileged services are unsupported. | Long-running self-managed server processes not suited to its execution model. | Stacks needing features that a specific shared or virtual plan cannot provide. |
